Today’s Activity: An OLSAT and Stanford-Binet Test Question Brought to Life By My Dogs #2
Today’s post is another practice OLSAT test question. It’s Friday and I’m having a hard time getting down to work. So I made another video (like the one I made yesterday) of Olive and Bronco acting out a test question for you. What can I say? It’s more fun to chase my dogs around with a video camera than to sit at my desk!
As I’m sure you remember, a common question that appears on the OLSAT test assesses your child’s language and memory skills. She is shown a black and white clipart picture of three dogs (for example). One is named Sugar, One is named Smokey, and one is named Cookie. The child is told that Sugar enjoys chasing bugs. Smokey enjoys eating shoes. Cookie enjoys howling at the moon. Then the child is asked, what does Smokey enjoy? What does Cookie enjoy? What does Sugar enjoy? The child has to listen carefully because the question can’t be repeated (since receptive language and memory skills are being assessed).
As your child watches this video, read the words to her. Then, ask her the questions below to see if she was paying attention. To make this a Stanford-Binet type question, watch the video together and read the words to the story. Then ask your child to tell you in her own words what happened in the story. “Tell me more?” “What else?” The actual images on an OLSAT and Stanford-Binet question are static versus the moving images on this video. On the Stanford-Binet, the child has to interpret the image without any words being read to her. But doing this activity with your child will build the same skill sets needed for both tests.
1. How many dogs were in this video?
2. What is the black dog’s name?
3. What is the name of the dog that eats vegetable treats?
4. What kind of treats does Bronco like to eat?
5. What kind of treats does Olive like to eat?
6. What do Olive and Bronco fight over?

My son LOVES these videos! What a great tool!!! I would love to see these amazing dogs doing something for the Stanford Binet test. :)
